Not looked at it from a bench. Not crossed over it on the subway. Actually paddled through it, close enough to feel the current push back against your oar.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is offering free public kayaking at Pier 2, and Thursday's session runs from 5 to 7 p.m. The bridge itself will be right there, arching overhead, doing its iconic bridge things while you sit at water level looking up at it from an angle almost nobody bothers to find.

This is one of those activities you see tourists doing and think: we should do that sometime.

This is your sometime.

What Actually Happens

You show up at Pier 2. You get outfitted with a kayak, a paddle, and a life vest. Staff on hand keep things safe and moving, so there is no need to have done this before, no need to own gear, no need to plan much beyond arriving.

The session runs two hours, which is enough time to get past the wobbly first five minutes and into the part where paddling starts to feel less like an obstacle course and more like gliding.

Why Thursday Evening Works

Late afternoon light on the East River has a way of making the whole skyline look considered, like someone arranged it on purpose. The bridge's cables catch the sun differently from the water than they do from the promenade. Boat traffic thins out. The city gets a little quieter, even with all that steel and stone doing its usual towering overhead.

This is also, notably, a free experience. No entry fee, no rental cost, no upsell waiting at the end. Just water, a boat, and two hours to use them.
